You see them everywhere for a reason – they are quite effective when used to promote a business, advertise an event, or simply express an opinion. To make the most out of this impactful medium, it will help if you fully understand its life cycle.

Picking the Right Yard Sign

The first step is to select the yard sign that suits your specific needs. Yard signs are highly versatile and come in different sizes, so it’s essential to sit down and think about what you specifically want to achieve with your signage.

Here at Signs.com, we offer an extensive selection of customizable yard signs that cater to various requirements. You’ll surely find the perfect fit!

Designing a Yard Sign

Once you have nailed down the specifics of your custom yard sign, it’s time to bring your message to life through design. Focus on your message and make it as straightforward as you can. This is also the best time to think about the tone you want to convey to ensure that your message is well-received by passersby. Do you want to be informative? Should you sound convincing? Or would it be best to use a funny line? The goal here is to make your yard sign as easy to understand and as memorable as possible!

If you need expert advice or assistance, our team of professional designers will be more than happy to lend a helping hand.

Installing and Moving Your Yard Sign

Selecting the ideal location is next on the agenda of making your yard sign shine. To maximize its impact, consider placing it in high-traffic areas or busy streets where passers-by will notice it. However, you may need permission to place signage in certain areas depending on local regulations, so check with authorities or property owners to be sure!

Another great thing about yard signs is they are made of durable yet lightweight materials, so feel free to move them if you want to advertise in a different location.

Maintaining Your Yard Sign

Proper maintenance is key to make your yard signs eye-catching for a long time. Here are a few ways you can keep your custom yard sign in tip-top shape:

  • Wipe down your yard sign regularly with a damp cloth to remove dirt, dust, and debris.
  • If it gets dirty or stained, you can use a mild soap and water solution to clean it. Be sure to rinse the sign thoroughly with clean water afterwards.
  • Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners as these can damage your yard sign’s material.

When not in use, store your yard sign in a cool, dry place to prevent fading, cracking, or warping.

Recycling Your Yard Signs

A yard sign’s life doesn’t stop when it’s no longer needed. Once you’re done displaying your yard sign, remove the stake, any stickers or decals (if there are any), and dirt and debris to prepare it for recycling. If you have multiple yard signs, you can flatten them with a brick or a thick book to make them easier to transport. Here are a few ways you can recycle your yard sign:

  • Bring it to local recycling facilities. Many of these accept plastic materials such as yard signs made of corrugated plastic. Check with your local recycling center if they have drop-off points for these items.
  • Look for a recycling program. Some organizations and companies offer specialized recycling programs for yard signs. Ask around – maybe your neighborhood or community has one!
  • Upcycle and repurpose. Get creative with your old yard signs by turning them into waterproof markers for your garden or as protective covers for delicate surfaces during paint jobs and messy DIY projects.

Now that you are well-acquainted with yard signs, what are you waiting for? Get your message out to the public by ordering your custom yard signs from Signs.com today.

At Signs.com, we live and breathe signs. We spend most of our waking hours learning new ways to improve, not just our catalog but every single product in it. We also earmark time to review what our customers have to say — the good, the not so good, and what we can do to make both better, and what that might cost.

But if we’re being candid, a testimonial from a satisfied customer is priceless. So, humor us a little. Today, we’re sharing with you real and heartfelt reviews from our delighted customers and a little insider knowledge on how we were able to make them happy.

Quality and Durability

Permanent Decals Quality and Durability

Our vinyl banners are designed to withstand the elements so that you can use them for a long time and get your money’s worth. We use 13 oz. and 18 oz. variants of 100% vinyl for our vinyl banners, which are resistant to water, tearing, and fading. This material is created with a weft inserted knit or an internal scrim which makes it durable enough for both outdoor and indoor use.

Another resilient material we use for our banners is mesh. This type of vinyl is 30% perforated and is perfect for locations where the weather is normally windy and for banners that are meant to be displayed on fences or between posts. Just like solid vinyl, the mesh type is weather-proof and able to repel water without sustaining damage.

We also offer fabric banners which are made of 6.8 oz. 100% polyester and are washable, wrinkle-resistant, and lightweight. This fabric comes with a light sheen which shows through after printing using dye-sublimation process. It may be lightweight but it’s also scratch-resistant and water-resistant, so you won’t have to worry about it getting run-down when displayed outdoors.

Quick and Easy Installation

Vinyl Banners Quick and Easy Installation

Banners are set up differently depending on purpose and location, so we prepared for every possible scenario that you’d like to install yours. For starters, solid vinyl, mesh, and fabric banners may be designed with grommets or pole pockets to make installation easy. They can also be hung using bungees, nylon ropes, hanging clips, zip ties, and suction cups. These will help you set up your banner on fences, walls, or hooks and keep them in place. You can order any of these additional accessories upon checkout.

If you’re looking for something that will double as décor, you can choose from our line of step and repeat banners. These come with durable poles and stand and a carrying case so you can take your banner from one event location to another with ease. X Banners are available as well. These are the ones attached to an X Banner stand made of aluminum and fiberglass. A retractable banner on the other hand looks sturdy and polished with its firm metal base and portable setup.

Another popular choice for outdoor banners is flags, available in different styles — teardrop, feather, and flag. These are set up using poles and suspended to the ground using a ground stake, a base with waterbag, or a cross base. Flag banners are easy to assemble, and the poles may be packed away with the base, so you move the sign around as you like and store it after use.

Yard signs are among the most popular displays used all over the world. It’s a tried and tested classic that works for simple garage sales, budding realtors, to political candidates. It’s a versatile promotional tool that can be used by anyone from any industry. While the humble yard sign may seem simple and straightforward, there’s more to it than meets the eye. In this article, we explore some of the most common questions our customers ask us about yard signs.

How To Put Up or Install Yard Signs

The simplest and most popular way to install yard signs is by using wire stakes. These are H-shaped steel stakes that you drive into the ground. They are lightweight, easy to transport, and when used correctly, reusable. Putting them up is simple:

  1. Find a suitable surface where your yard sign will be displayed. Ensure the surface is soft enough to insert the wire stake but firm enough to hold your sign up.
  1. To install the wire stake, push it far enough in that it will support the yard sign. You can use your foot to add extra force if the ground is firmer. Take care when doing either that you don’t bend the wire stakes as you do so.
  1. Once the stake is firmly placed in the ground, you can slide on your yard sign. Align the corrugated flutes inside of the yard sign with the top prongs of the stake and slide it on.

Our wire stakes come in standard and heavy-duty versions. Standard is made from 9-gauge steel while heavy-duty has a sturdier base made from 1/4″ steel with a welded top also made from 9-gauge steel. The heavy-duty stake provides more stability and strength when facing windy conditions. With routine care and maintenance, wire stakes can be reused for years.

While wire stakes are the most common way to put up yard signs, they are versatile enough to work with other display methods as well. Signs.com offers three different metal frames and suction cups that can all be used to display yard signs.

Additionally, wooden stakes are yet another way to display yard signs. The primary advantage of these is that they are easier to drive into hard surfaces than the traditional wire stakes. You can then attach your sign to the wooden stakes via a screw or bolt with a head that is big enough to hold the sign in place – but be careful not to splinter the wooden stake in the process. This is typically a more laborious and costly method of displaying them but can work better if they are going to be up for an extended period.

Spider stakes are a modern take on the traditional H-stakes. They are easy to install, give additional wind resistance, and are made of 100% recycled material.

If your yard sign has grommets, you can also hang them using rope, hooks, or zip ties.

If your location is prone to strong wind, we recommend installing the yard signs at a slight angle so that the sign itself doesn’t absorb the full impact of the wind. You should also try to drive the wire stake as deep as you can, within reason, to strengthen the base support. Another tip to combat strong winds is to use two stakes. On smaller signs, you can install the first stake normally, then use one prong from a second stake and insert it in the middle of the yard sign panel, creating a T-shape. Drive both stakes into the ground. For larger signs, that do not result in horizontal fluting, Signs.com offers two wire stakes that can both be installed in standard fashion to help keep your signs upright and displayed as they are intended.

If you plan to put up really large yard signs and that need to be displayed for an extended period of time it is common to reinforce the back before displaying them. Otherwise, you run the risk of the signs toppling over or being damaged by the wind. Similar to the wooden stakes method above, you can attach the sign to a large piece of plywood that will serve as a protective and sturdy backing. With or without the solid backing, a custom wooden or metal frame will also help your oversized yard sign last for the long run while displayed outside.

Rules and Regulations of Displaying Yard Signs

While the process of designing, buying, and displaying yard signs is super easy, there are a number of common questions as it relates to displaying your yard signs. The most common is: where can one put yard signs? Additionally, how long can they be displayed for? What about what they can and can’t say? Does this differ where the yard sign is placed – on private property vs. public property? All of these questions are worth thinking about as you move through the design and ordering process. While we’re not legal experts, as best as we can, we’ve tried to address some of these questions around yard sign placement below.

Where Can I Put Yard Signs?

Some states, municipalities, and homeowners’ associations (HOA) have strict rules regarding the use of yard signs, whether it’s political in nature or not. In general, as long as the yard signs are placed within your property, you have the freedom to do so. This means that you can place for sale signs, advocacy messages, religious messages, or political support on your lawn or property without fear of running into any issues. Which, of course, as it relates to freedom of speech makes perfect sense. However, placing yard signs outside your property, such as in empty lots, along city streets, public parks, etc., depends on local rules and regulations and as noted below this public display of certain messages is where personal rights such as freedom of speech and local laws have collided in recent years. Thus, simply put: for yard sign use outside your personal property, it’s best to consult with the municipality, homeowner’s association, or other applicable governing body to make sure you are adhering to any rules or regulations that may be in place as it relates to where your signage can be displayed.

How Long Can My Signs Stay Up?

Once again, this answer is contingent on where your yard signs are displayed. Of course, on private property, we know of no rules or regulations that state that lawn signs can only be displayed for a certain period of time. Of course, if your private property is governed by some kind of HOA and you’ve agreed to certain covenants and restrictions there might be some duration limitations but otherwise, you are free to display the sign(s) for as long as you wish.

On public property, once again, it is prudent to verify if there are any stipulations surrounding the duration of displaying signage. We know for certain that many cities often give political candidates “x” number of hours or days after the election has ended to remove all signage from public property. Understandably the administrators of certain public property locations don’t want signage from past elections, causes, and events permanently displayed in an unsightly and dated way. So, whether you’re a political candidate, a supporter, or have placed yard signs for an entirely different reason on public property, make sure to know what is required as it relates to the removal of your sign.

What Can I Put On My Yard Signs?

The actual content of your yard sign is far and away the most complicated part of the public display of yard signs. Like the questions around where and for how long, there is both a public and private property angle to consider as it relates to the actual content of your sign.

We would assume that on private property you can display religious or political (or otherwise) related yard signs with whatever you want on them given that it is your private property and it would fall under freedom of speech rights. That said, you may want to make sure that there are no HOA regulations surrounding the content of your displayed signage.

That said, and regardless of possible HOA regulations, there may be some cases where what you put on your sign is regulated. For example, can you display signs about your immediate neighbor or others in your neighborhood? Generally speaking, yes, as long as it’s within your property it is your constitutional right. However, you may only be permitted to do so if you’re abiding by local laws and regulations, as well as your HOA agreement. For example, in some cases, you can’t display yard signs calling your neighbor a sexual predator. In some places like Starke, Florida, and Corpus Christi, Texas, it is the police and local government who are authorized to display such signs. While there is no way for us to detail every single city or municipality’s governing laws as it relates to this one example, let alone all of the unique situations that may arise, if you plan on putting up signs with potentially offensive content to some, it’s best to take a moment and consult any governing bodies and local laws before doing so even if the message is factually correct.

On a similar note, even when you’re displaying signage on private property, creating and displaying signs that display unsubstantiated claims or misinformation may be deemed as harassment, defamation, or run afoul of fair business practices. Any of these scenarios could quickly become an invitation to a lawsuit or create other legal issues. So, while you might have the freedom to display anything you want, we’d urge caution, common sense, and decency as you determine what your sign on your private property will display.

As for what you can and can’t put on your yard signs when displayed on public property it can be even more complicated. In the landmark case, Reed v. Town of Gilbert, Ariz., 576 U.S. 155 (2015), the United States Supreme Court deemed that sign placement regulation on the basis of content is unconstitutional. Thus, while it may appear that this gives the sign creator carte blanche as to messaging undoubtedly the governing bodies of said public properties have their own set of rules and restrictions in an effort to avoid situations that may create contention and/or liable situations. While we once again can’t detail all the scenarios or write a brief that balances freedom of speech rights vs. public display of signage messaging we’d recommend ensuring that your signs’ message will be in compliance with any possible regulation or laws that might be in place where you plan on displaying them.

While the above questions around location, duration, and content of yard signs can very quickly veer into complicated legal areas, for the vast majority of sign uses you can rest assured that with a little common sense and decency you’re probably just fine in displaying your yard signs with the original messaging. To be safe, and because we’re not legal experts, we’d still highly recommend verifying with any governing body or location where you might be displaying your yard signs to make sure the location, duration, and content of your yard sign display won’t cause any issues.

How To Protect Yard Signs?

The simplicity of yard signs also has a negative – they can be vandalized, stolen, or damaged. While this is illegal, it does happen sometimes, especially during election season when yard signs are seemingly everywhere and emotions run high. The best way to avoid this scenario is to make sure that your yard signs are placed in a well-lit, visible area inside your property to deter trespassers. If you have a CCTV camera, make sure that your yard signs are within view as well to catch the faces of the culprits.

Though it isn’t currently offered by Signs.com, you can also use an anti-graffiti laminate to help protect your signs that may not be placed on your property or with any kind of video surveillance deterrent. This film is placed on top of your sign to protect it from stains, chemicals, permanent markers, and paint. If your sign does get vandalized, you can use household cleaners on the laminate to remove the marks without risking damage to your yard sign. While this is an additional cost to consider, it ensures that your signs are safe from being defaced by anyone with ill intent. Lastly, you can also opt to remove the yard signs at night and put them up again in the morning.

While corrugated plastic is weatherproof, inclement weather can still damage it. Extreme weather conditions, such as ones with abnormal amounts of precipitation, wind, or temperatures, can negatively affect your yard signs. If the weather forecast is bad, we recommend stowing them away until the weather passes. For very little effort, this will ensure the longevity of your yard signs.

 Can Yard Signs Have Grommets?

While wire stakes are far and away the most common way to display yard signs, grommets are sometimes used as well. Grommets are small metal rings usually used with vinyl banners for easy hanging. These are located on the corners of the banner and you can use rope, zip ties, or suction cups to hang your banner. Likewise, you can select grommets to be placed on your yard sign so you can hang it up on your door, windows, or anywhere you prefer. Our yard signs are weatherproof, so you can hang them indoors or outdoors. When using them outdoors, make sure the grommets are tightly tied or firmly secured to ensure it doesn’t fall down.

The primary advantage of choosing grommets for your yard sign is the added display versatility that comes with it. You can display it using wire stakes or hang it with rope and hooks. This is a good option to consider if you’re always changing the location of your signs or need to display it in a unique way. It ensures that you can display your marketing materials whatever the place or situation. However, grommets do have the potential of interfering with your design. Thus, if you know you need grommets for your yard sign make sure to design your sign in a way that the grommets (in the four corners or top two corners) don’t detract from your design or main message in any way. While grommets for your yard sign are a far less common option there is no doubt they still look great and add even more versatility to an already great sign choice!

How To Store Yard Signs

After the seasonal events are over, you’ll need to store your yard signs properly to keep them in good condition. Since our corrugated plastic signs last for years, you can reuse them once the situation presents itself.

We recommend storing yard signs upright next to each other. You can store it flat and stacked but make sure not to place anything heavy on top of it to prevent permanent unsightly dents and creases (unlike vinyl banner wrinkles or creases these will not come out). This also goes for wire stakes. Placing heavy items on top of the stakes can make the steel bend, rendering it unusable.

Store the yard signs in a cool, dry place. Dirt and humidity can in some cases lead to mold formation. When the time comes to display your yard signs again simply wipe them down with a wet rag and they should be good to go!

That’s A Wrap!

We hope that our brief guide on some of the finer side of yard signs can assist you in making the right decision as you purchase yard signs. With this extra knowledge, we’re confident that you’ll get plenty of value from a true time-tested signage solution.

Election season is just around the corner – that time of year when we cast our votes to determine everything from Congressional representatives and city mayors to county treasurer, township trustee, and members of the local school board. And, of course, 2020 is a presidential-election year, too. As a result, political messaging and promotions/marketing will abound – and there may be no more efficient way to get a political message out there than the ubiquitous yard sign.

Not that yard signs can’t serve other uses, too: real-estate signs, business promotional signs, yard sales, directional signage for events, to name a few. They can be printed single- or double-sided, and cut to just about any shape. They can be placed on wire supports, installed in frames, or simply propped up or hung.

Given all of these possible applications and uses, a logical question is: What is the typical yard sign made of – and why might this material be ideal for this particular type of sign? The answer is corrugated plastic.

In this Signage 101, we’ll take a deep dive into why corrugated plastic is an ideal substrate for yard signs.

Corrugated Plastic is King

Corrugated plastic wasn’t always king – in the past, various other materials were utilized in making of yard signs, from single-panel aluminum to plastic and composites. Corrugated plastic, however, came out on top and is, today, the de-facto material when it comes to yard signs.

Why is corrugated plastic such a good choice for this particular type of signage? It’s a combination of factors: Corrugated plastic is durable, it’s lightweight, it can be made conducive to UV printing, and it’s relatively inexpensive. As a result, there’s probably no better option for a yard sign.

Let’s take a look at the basics of the material. Corrugated plastic is a plastic – most often polypropylene – that features fluted structures (“fluting”) at the core, set between two plastic sheets. You might also hear this hollow material referred to as “twin-wall plastic.” Conceived of and developed in the early 1970s by an Italian manufacturing firm, corrugated plastic is now produced by various manufacturers under an assemblage of names. And it’s used for an impressive array of applications: from signage and the graphics arts, to boxes, shelf bins, packaging, and even truck bed liners, construction projects, and shelters.

In its “natural” state, however, corrugated plastic is not receptive to printing inks or other coatings. To enable this capability, the manufacturers must give the plastic a “corona treatment” – which is a surface treatment that promotes adhesion (and, it should be pointed out, is not at all related to coronavirus or COVID-19). It basically works like this: High voltage is used to generate an electrical discharge (“corona plasma”), which changes the plastic’s surface energy and allows it to then accept ink. Depending upon the material or substrate, the corona treatment might have to take place twice, in order to ensure good adhesion.

Once that process has been completed, the corrugated plastic can then be printed on using digital printing technologies by your favorite sign producer (which, of course, is Signs.com!). And, as stated earlier, various brands are available – including Coroplast, IntePro, Cor-X, Corflute, and many others. In fact, the Coroplast brand name (which is now owned by Inteplast) has become so synonymous with corrugated plastic – especially in the signage and graphics markets – that you’ll often hear many use that name for the generic material.

All the Advantages

For our yard signs here at Signs.com, we utilize 4mm-thick corrugated plastic, and direct-print with colorful and durable UV inks. Here are just some of the reasons why we’re bullish on corrugated plastic for yard signs (and you should be, too):

Lightweight, portable, sturdy – Corrugated plastic is impact-resistant due to its fluted “ribs,” yet remains very lightweight. As a result, yard signs made from the material can be easily moved from location to location as needed, and they’ll be perfectly fine with all that relocation (see below for installation options).

Durable printability – Because of the aforementioned corona treatment, UV inks adhere very nicely to the surface. Of course, our UV inks are durable in and of themselves (fade- and abrasion-resistant), so the combination results in your graphic and message holding up well over time.

Weather-resistant – Corrugated plastic will repel moisture, and there’s zero danger of rot or rust.

Easily cut/routed – Because it’s easy to cut (manually or mechanically), corrugated plastic is great when it comes to producing custom shapes for your yard signs.

Recyclable – Polypropylene is capable of being recycled (resin code 5), although it’s not typically curbside-recyclable (check with your local municipality) and it’s not biodegradable; corrugated plastic can be recycled and repurposed into ice scrapers, rakes, pallets, battery cases, and other applications.

Easy-to-clean – You can wipe down corrugated plastic yard signs with mild soap and warm water; we suggest wiping in the direction of the corrugation.

Economical – Last, but certainly not least, corrugated plastic is relatively inexpensive; it’s one of the least-expensive materials.

Portability is Key

We gave a shout-out to the portability of corrugated yard signs in the above section, and this portability is enhanced by the ability to display them with wire stakes. Using wire stakes, you can install corrugated yard signs in seconds into any soft surface, and then easily take them down and use again in another location as necessary. They’re the ultimate in temporary, re-usable signage.

We offer two different types of wire stakes for our corrugated yard signs: standard and heavy-duty. The standard wire stakes are made from 9-gauge steel; simply step the stakes into the ground and position the points of the stakes over the yard sign’s flutes. If you want something that provides even more stability, we offer our heavy-duty stakes made from ¼-inch steel mated to a 9-gauge welded top. Both types of stakes measure 10 x 30 inches.

You have additional display options for corrugated plastic yard signs: You can, for instance, hang them using grommets and rope/string; attach them to a rigid substrate using washers and screws; place in a real-estate frame; or even add an A-Frame and use as a sandwich board.

Designing Your Ideal Yard Sign

Yard signs made from corrugated plastic can be a tremendously useful tool for a variety of marketing and promotional efforts. Political operatives recognized this fact decades ago, and as a result the use of yard signs in political campaigns surged, more than doubling between 1984 and 2008.

Signs.com can assist you in your quest for the ideal yard sign for your project. We’ll help you determine the best design, custom shape options, printing single-sided or double-sided, installation alternatives, and just about anything else you might need help with. Just don’t ask us for campaign advice!

In this installment of our Small Business Success Series, we chat with Chad Hays, the owner and CEO of Legacy Crown Exteriors in Dallas, Texas. The company recently purchased an array of signage from Signs.com, including a custom printed pop-up tent and dozens of corrugated plastic yard signs – custom cut and rectangular in shape.

Chad and Legacy Crown Exteriors are not only committed to excellence in their work, but also in going the proverbial extra mile when it comes to customer service. We wanted to hear more about how they’ve been able to successfully unite the two goals in the Lone Star State.

Passion for Creating a Positive Legacy

Chad Hays (center) and his Legacy Crown Exteriors crew.

Tell us about yourself
My name is Chad Hays, 38, and I’m from Dallas, Texas. I’ve lived in Lindale, Texas and Dallas most of my life. I enjoy spending time with my family, and I enjoy the camaraderie of meaningful friendships as well. When I’m not working, I’m planning something adventurous – whether it be flying, writing music, camping, cooking, or jumping out of airplanes. I’m very passionate about life, and I strive to be the best leader that I can be. I also enjoy helping out the less fortunate at every opportunity I get. My brother is quadriplegic and one of my long-term goals is to have a charity devoted to modifying homes for disabled people.

What does your company do?
Legacy Crown Exteriors, LLC does residential and commercial roofing, remodeling, and pool and spa enclosures. We specialize in all types of roofing – from asphalt shingles to metal and clay tile roofing on the residential side, as well as TPO and silicone coatings on the commercial side. We do interior and exterior remodels, from designer-grade to “lipstick” remodels. Whether it’s an outdoor kitchen or an indoor bathroom renovation, we can do it.

Legacy Crown’s custom pop-up tent (6-oz. polyester, with aluminum frame) in the background; corrugated plastic yard sign in foreground.

Which came first – the roofing jobs or the remodeling and pool enclosures, etc.?
Roofing jobs definitely came first – remodeling and the other types of jobs were needs that we wanted to meet, and these were outgrowths of our roofing. The roofing initially gives us an opportunity to showcase our work and build trust. Once do a good job, our customers typically want us to do more work.

Where did the idea of your company come from?
I wanted to leave a positive legacy behind, and building quality roofing systems would be the catalyst for that. “Crown,” of course, is another name for a roof, so it just made sense to pair the two words in our company name.

Going the Extra Mile

What sets you apart from your competition?
We truly consider the desires of our customers and empathetically cater to each project. We strive for perfection with each project we take on, and we truly want to create a positive experience for each one of our customers.

How do you market your business?
We use a lot of brochures, signs, door hangers, and social media platforms right now. Our marketing strategies are ever-changing as our revenue increases and we then have the means to try new marketing vehicles.

How do you “wow” your customers?
We’ll try to throw in “extras” at no cost to the customer. For example, if the customer has a molded sidewalk or driveway, we will power-wash it clean after we install a roof. Small things like that show we want to go the extra mile for them.

What are one or two strategies for gaining customers that you have been successful with?
Brochures, signs, and door hangers have yielded the best results for us so far. Direct selling is very effective for us, too.

How do you compete with competitors that are bigger than you?
Our team’s work ethic is what sets us apart. Our industry is very competitive, so we try to set ourselves apart by building quality roofing systems and superior remodels.

What has been your most exciting (or unusual) job?
Our most exciting job to date was an urgent-care facility that we did a waterproof roof coating for. I had installed a roof for the medical director of that facility, and the job came as a referral from him because he was so pleased with our work.

One Foot in Front of the Other

What is one of the biggest challenges you have had with your business, and how did you overcome it?
Our biggest challenge was getting our name out there, and becoming a company that people actually knew existed. The only way to overcome that is to never give up – we put one foot in front of the other every day and continued to market the business.

If you were to start again, what would you do differently?
I would have started with more seed capital.

What is the one thing you would do over and over, and recommend that others do as well?
Set personal and professional goals. Goals keep the vision alive, and effort is the only thing that can help you attain the goals or vision that you have for yourself and your company.

What is the one book that you recommend to our Signs.com community should read, and why?
The Greatest Miracle in the World, by Og Mandino. It’s very inspirational and its pages will encourage you to be both fearless and compassionate – which I believe are two virtues that everyone should strive to possess.

Legacy Crown Exteriors utilizes its custom pop-up tent for shade, promotion, and storage during installations.

Something Greater

Can you speak to your growth to this point – and why you think it will continue?
Hard work and doing the next right thing always leads to something greater, whether it’s at a slow or fast pace. Resilience and treating people the right way always pays off, and that’s what I attribute to the growth we’ve had and will continue to experience.

How has the recent Covid-19 pandemic affected your business?
Covid-19 has definitely had an impact on our business! Because we want to respect the concerns of property owners, this has limited our ability to generate new business as effectively as in the past. Even though we’re an essential business, it’s still been a challenge to get momentum with the contact boundaries most people are adhering to.

What is one thing most people don’t know about you?
At one point in my life, I would take a grill to the homeless areas of Dallas every weekend and cook hotdogs for hundreds of homeless people.

Where can you be found on the internet (website, social media, etc.)?

Signage 101: Yard Sign Sizes

]]>
What size is a yard sign? Have you ever asked yourself this question while planning out your real estate listings, political campaigns or any other cause that you would like to display in a yard? We have seen thousands of yard signs at various sizes over the years at Signs.com. Using our experience, we wrote this blog post to go over the standard and common dimensions for yard sign sizes and to help guide you to the perfect sign.

What are yard signs?

First off, let’s give a little insight into what exactly a yard sign is. Many yard signs are made from corrugated plastic with vertical fluting. Vertical fluting is made of small sections in the interior of the material that run like columns in a vertical direction.

Yard Sign Vertical Fluting
Vertical fluting on a yard sign

This vertical fluting provides little holes that run all the way through the interior of the sign. This allows the wire stakes you may use to display the sign to be placed inside of the vertical fluting. The stakes can then be easily displayed in any yard or landscape. This is one of the most simple ways to display your yard sign. The corrugated plastic yard signs are typical 4mm in thickness.

When it comes to the material of yard signs, you have a few options other than corrugated plastic. There are also rigid plastic signs that work well displayed in a real estate frame or with grommets on the corners and hung up. Then there is the standard aluminum sign that is typically displayed with real estate frames.

Yard signs are generally displayed in yards, but can be displayed just about anywhere. So feel free to get creative with the ways you print and display custom yard signs. Common display methods for yard signs include wire stakes, metal frames, real estate posts and grommets. Common uses for yard signs include political campaigns, expressing political views, real estate, business use (sales, promotions, grand openings), directional signs (parking) or events (weddings, birthday parties, graduation, etc.).

What size are yard signs?

Are there a standard yard sign sizes I should follow? Yard sign dimensions are typically 24”x18” (2 feet wide and 1 ½ feet tall). This size works great for a variety of applications and is large enough to display information for people to clearly see as they pass by.  This size is also compatible with a variety of display methods, including wire stakes and metal frames.

Yard sign with wire stakes
Standard 24″x18″ yard sign displayed on wire stakes

Although this is the standard size for yard signs, it is not the only size you can use. Other popular yard signs sizes include 24″x6″, 18″x12″, 36″x18″, 2’x2′ and 4’x4′. There are a few different reasons you may choose one of the above sizes. You may want a larger sign to be displayed in a difficult to see area. Or you already have real estate frames that are a certain size, in which case you need to order for those sizes. Understanding which kind of yard sign you are going to purchase and how you will display it are important factors to help you understand which is the correct yard sign size for you.

You may even consider ordering a jumbo yard sign. When you think of jumbo yard signs you may think of a large billboard or banner. When we talk about jumbo yard signs we are actually just talking about anything that is larger than the standard size. So while the standard size is 24”x18”, if you opted for a 4’x4’ sign that would be considered a jumbo yard sign. Even opting for the 36”x18” or 2’x2’ option could be considered a jumbo yard sign.

Choosing a size based on your preferred display method

Wire stakes

Yard sign wire stake installation
Example of how to display a yard sign with wire stakes

Wire Stakes are frequently used with yard signs that are made from corrugated plastic with vertical fluting. This means that the stakes you use to display the signs are placed inside of the vertical fluting. This is one of the most simple ways to display your yard sign. Make sure that your custom yard sign size is compatible with the size of stake you purchase. The standard size of 24”x18” is great for all wire stakes.

Signs.com features two different types of yard sign stakes. Our standard stakes are made of a 9 gauge steel. Our heavy duty stakes are made of ¼” steel and have a welded top of 9 guage steel. Both stakes work well, but the heavy duty one is a bit more stable than the standard one. Something else to consider when using wire stakes is when using only 1 wire stake, you should keep the size of your sign under 48” wide. If your yard sign is larger than 48” wide, we recommend ordering two wire stakes per sign to give the sign more support.

Metal frames

Real estate frame with a rider
Real estate frame with double rider

If you are using a metal frame to display your sign, you will need to match the size of the sign with the size of the insert location on the frame. Real estate frames are typically are made for a 24”x18” standard size real estate sign. It can hold various yard sign materials such as corrugated plastic, rigid plastic and aluminum. The standard height for real estate frames is 47” with a 24” standard width. The frames are made of a durable iron frame.

Signs.com offers a few different options for real estate frames. We have standard frames that have a single 24”x18” insert location to display one sign. You can also get a metal frame that has either one or two added sign rider insert sections. Sign riders are often placed on metal frames above or below the main sign opening. Riders are used for displaying phone numbers, names, contact info or business branding on real estate frames. It is an additional tool to display more than just the yard sign in the yard. The standard size for sign riders is 24”x6.” That is the size of the insert location for sign riders on most metal frames. Riders are typically sold separately from the yard sign and metal frame.

Additional Display Methods

Real estate frame example

Another display option to consider for your yard sign is a real estate post. Most real estate posts are designed to fit yard signs sizes up to 24” wide. Some allow for signs up to 36” wide. Another very cost effective way to display your yard sign is with grommets. Grommets can be any size, since the grommets will be used to mount the sign to a fence or wall. So if you are purchasing a yard sign that doesn’t match dimensions to the options we mentioned above, grommets is a good bet with any size.

Choosing a size based on your intended use

While your intended display method will play a large role in helping you determine the size you need for your yard sign, there are a few other things you should consider before deciding on the final yard sign sizes. For example, political campaign yard sign sizes can vary. If you want to stand out, may want to use larger signs. If you are running a political campaign and want to display a yard sign along the side of the road, you may want to order a sign large enough to make it easy for people driving by to see and read your sign.

A good rule to remember is the message on your sign will have roughly 10 feet of viewing distance for each inch of letter height. For example, if the text on your sign is 3” tall most people will be able to read that text from up to 30 feet away.

For real estate yard sign sizes your biggest consideration is to get sizes that match up with your display methods. As for business use, many businesses order yard signs from us to display inside or outside of their store or office. The ways these can be displayed can vary based on the use and location of the sign. If you are printing the sign with grommets and intend to hang it, the size can be as large or small as you would like. If you decide to purchase yard signs for an event, it may need to be a larger sign to get the attention of your attendees.

Why opt for Temporary Signs?

The main idea behind temporary signage is it’s both flexible and functional.

Rather than hassle with nails and screws that leave permanent, unsightly holes, temporary signs typically offer all-in-one or other simple display options, making installation and removal quick and clean. And as these materials tend to be lightweight and durable, their portability makes them easy to transport quickly and to install without the need for specialized hardware or additional manpower.

In addition to their easy set up, temporary signs are typically manufactured out of low cost, recyclable materials, making them more cost-effective for virtually any budget. That lower price point means you can buy signs in bulk, maximizing your ability to reach more potential customers, or to notify your regulars of short-term changes.

Then when you’re done, temporary signs offer the convenience of no-hassle disposal in a way that leaves no mess and that’s friendly toward the environment.

The ability to easily swap out and update creative assets on the fly makes temporary signs the ideal solution for displaying any short-term message!

What are Temporary Signs used for?

Temporary signs are used everywhere. They’re perfect for promoting limited sales events, providing directional signage at construction sites, and even in advertising a realtor’s open house. In this article, we’ll cover the main advantages of temporary signage and how it’s used in various industries, from businesses and nonprofits to consumers, alike. So whether you’re promoting your local food drive, planning a yard sale, or ramping up awareness for your local 5K, here are the 7 types of temporary signs you’ll want to consider:

Example of a Poster

Posters

A common form of advertising, posters are incredibly easy to display (even in mass quantities). Hang posters anywhere: inside in hallways and on doors, and outside on fences. You can even hold posters at sporting events or other outdoor events, as opposed to hanging them up. The caveat is that they aren’t waterproof. So make sure to only use them in suitable conditions if you’re going to use them outdoors! Use them in dry areas with low wind. They are lightweight so they can be hung up with sticky-tack or tape.

Benefits of Posters

    • Large quantity orders / Budget friendly
    • Ideal for indoor use
    • Quickly post on bulletin boards, walls, sign and light posts
  • More cost friendly than other sign types such as banners

Where They Fall Short:

    • Damage easily in tough weather conditions
        • Rain/moisture
      • Wind
  • Not rigid

Example of Opaque Static Cling Example of Clear Static Cling

Opaque Window Cling / Clear Window Cling

Clings are great for decorating windows for seasonal events or limited-time promotions; displaying store hours, social media links, or even online review ratings. They’ll even work great for stores or locations during renovation or construction. There really isn’t much hassle to them: just peel off the protective backing and slap them on a window and voila! – you have yourself quick and easy advertising or decor.

Unlike traditional window decals, window clings do not use an adhesive backing to stick to the surface. Nonetheless, they are a durable short-term option that are removable and repositionable for reuse, whereas traditional window decals are semi-permanent in nature—you can remove them, but you can’t reuse them. Use static clings on various surfaces such as windows, glass, non-porous metal, and other smooth surfaces.

Benefits of Static Cling Decals

    • Advertise directly on windows, doors and other smooth surfaces
    • Removable and reusable
    • Easy to remove/install
  • No adhesives/residue

Where They Fall Short:

    • Not as permanent as decals/stickers
    • Can’t be applied to fabrics or other porous surfaces
  • Not as vibrant as other options

Opaque Window Clings

Clear Window Clings

Example of Floor Decal

Floor Decals

Not only are floor decals great for catching attention (think “Watch your step”) but they are great for temporary indoor use. Floor decals (also known as floor stickers) perform well as more permanent signage options, with some lasting as long as 3 years, but we recommend replacing them yearly for best results. Like with most temporary signage, there really isn’t a limit to what can be displayed. They can be placed on cement, tile, brick, and even carpet.

Floor decals are great for directing your customers or event attendees toward points of interest. They’re perfect for increasing brand awareness and messaging exposure even in heavily trafficked, indoor areas. Finally, once you’re done displaying it, just peel it away from the floor and quickly clean any adhesive that may remain.

Benefits of Floor Decals

    • Easily noticeable, eye-catching
    • Temporary or long-term use
  • Can withstand heavy foot traffic
  • Can be placed on both hard surfaces and softer ones like carpet

Where They Fall Short:

    • Receive a lot of wear and tear
  • Only advertised on floor

Floor Decals

Example of Foam Board

Foam Board

Extremely lightweight and easy to hang or prop, foam board can quickly be displayed in your store with no more than a few strips of tape or some plastic hooks. Foam board is great for a number of uses. Use them in a business setting to present a chart/graph, at a fair to advertise directions and/or rides, or at conferences to advertise keynote speakers.

Foam board is comprised of biodegradable foam and paper, making it a great option for projects ranging from one-time use with easy disposal to more permanent indoor applications lasting up to 2 years with proper care and maintenance. It’s not recommended you display foam board in wet conditions, but in the right conditions (no precipitation and no wind) you can even get away with using these signs outside for short stints of time.

Benefits of Foam Board

    • Lightweight
    • Cut-to-shape designs
  • Rigid

Where They Fall Short:

    • Stiff–can’t bend or fold
  • Not suitable for wet/windy conditions

Vinyl Banner Example

Banners

One of the best-known temporary signage options, banners offer great functionality with a range of display possibilities. They come in a variety of formats, including vinyl, fabric, and mesh.

Vinyl banners offer a durable, heavy-duty display for outdoor use, while fabric and mesh are the lighter weight options, the latter enabling wind to pass through. Banners are excellent for promoting grand openings, holiday sales, birthday parties, baby showers, graduations, and so on. In addition to these, they are also perfect for seasonal hiring, construction sites, road work and temporary parking arrangements. You name it, banners can do it.

While we’re including banners in our temporary signage roundup, banners are very durable, often lasting years in extreme weather conditions. So they’re perfect for recurring events: ‘Now Hiring’ banners can be stored/used depending on when you’re hiring, ‘Happy Birthday’ banners can be used for multiple birthdays, and you can use them to advertise different recurring sales if you’re a business owner. Plus, banners don’t require any heavy duty hardware to display; simply tie them down using rope, zip-ties, or hang them from a pole with pole pockets.

Benefits of Banners

    • Extreme durability and water resistance
    • Large format signage
    • Easily rolled up for storage and reuse
  • Vinyl, mesh, and fabric options

Where They Fall Short:

    • Not freestanding
  • Must be hung using additional accessories
